Overhand Delivery | Henken [Baseball Pitching Lab Japan]

Overhand Delivery

The overhand delivery is a pitching style in which the ball is released from a high point, creating a steep downward angle.
This delivery allows the pitcher to take advantage of gravity when bringing the arm down, making it easier to generate higher velocity compared to other pitching styles.
In addition, the natural downward angle of the pitch helps force hitters to be conscious of the vertical strike zone.
For this reason, it is a common delivery among pitchers who rely on a powerful fastball.

Breaking Balls from an Overhand Delivery

The overhand delivery allows the pitcher to make greater use of gravity when bringing the arm down from a high position compared to other pitching styles.
However, this also means that additional forces beyond the pitcher's own muscle power are involved.
As a result, special care must be taken to avoid excessive stress on the shoulder.
Additionally, because the arm must be raised high, the upper body tends to tilt more significantly.
This posture can place strain on the back muscles and the sides of the torso.
Although not directly caused by the overhand delivery itself, pitchers who rely heavily on power pitching may also be more prone to overexertion, which can lead to injury if not managed properly.
